Dubrovnik (Day 7, Mar 23)

Today is our second day in Dubrovnik.  Since we didn't sign up for the Gate 1 silk factory and dinner meal (which was extra), we had all day to explore the town on our own.  We bought a 24-hour Dubrovnik City Pass late yesterday and if you ever get a chance to come here, I'd say it's worth it.  It's 35 euros per person but the wall walk alone is that much, plus you get access to museums and churches as well as free bus rides as long as the card is active.

We wanted to do the wall walk first since it would be cooler and less crowded in the morning.  We took the #6 bus from the hotel and got dropped off right outside the Old Town.  The entire walk is about 1.2 miles.

Looking down at the fountain which is being restored now.  The main street through town (Stradun) is to the left.

We did stop for a coffee about halfway through.  One of the "wall guides" allowed us to leave the wall and come back--he said, "Anything is possible" when we asked if we could, ha ha.  I doubt we could have done that if it was the height of the tourist season.

City view

View of the Old Port

View through the battlement

The walk took just over 2.5 hours--including photo time and coffee break--and after that we were on to our glass-bottom boat ride from the Old Port.  I will say that the ride was a little rough.  We weren't issued life jackets but I made sure I knew where they were.  The views were good, though.

View of the city and the wall we just walked from the Adriatic.

Another view

The boat didn't just give us views of the city, it went out to Lokram Island and back.  We didn't land on the island though.

View of rocks through the glass bottom.

I am glad we went on this trip but I'll admit I was glad to be back on dry land, ha ha.  It was time for lunch.  Fe and I both shared a plate of black risotto, made with cuttlefish ink.  I think I've said earlier that I'm surprised at what I'm eating on this trip.

It tasted pretty good.

It may sound weird, but after walking on the top of the walls in the morning we walked along the walls inside town.  I got a big surprise here--Fe walked through an open door in the wall and called me over.  This is what we found:

Looking up from the outside

Fe along the wall

Cat sunning itself.  There were lots of cats in this town.

Like I said, this was a surprise.  It seemed to be a place locals came for picnics or to just watch the sea.  But the biggest surprise was Fe walking through an open door uninvited.  That's something I usually do!

In all our travels, we've never been in an Orthodox church before (in this case Serbian).  I'm glad we stopped in.

I am guessing this is Mary and the Archangel Gabriel

It was time to head back to the hotel, so we took the bus back using the city pass.  But I didn't check the time and it had expired (shame, shame)!  Luckily the driver just waved us on and we made it back.  The last thing we did was have some dinner and walked down to the beach for some quick photos.

This was a busy day and tomorrow we'll be heading back north with an overnight stop in Vodice before heading away from the Dalmatian coast.

Bled and Ljubljana (Day 10, Mar 26)

Our hotel is only steps away from Lake Bled .  So naturally, I was up early to take a walk around the lake. Bled Castle Assumption of Mary Church .  You're going to see a lot of these. Bled Castle View of the Julian Alps Sunrise behind the church Crucifix in a carved niche on the side of the mountain. Another view of the church Our hotel (Hotel Park) is the darker building.  Not much to look at, but the location was great, the buffet was good, and the room was comfortable. Morning view I'm glad I got up early to do this but while flat and easy, the walk around the lake was longer than I thought at 6 km (3.7 mi).  I had to hustle towards the end to make it back in time for breakfast.  And I'm not much of a hustler. After breakfast we got on the bus which took us to Bled Castle , the oldest castle in Slovenia.   View from the castle Fe and I at another castle viewpoint   Inside the castle courtyard.  The "Bird of Paradise"  is a symbol of ...

Zadar (Day 4, Mar 20)

A lot of bus travel today.  We left Opatija about 815 am and drove down to Zadar.  With stops, it took about four hours and I'll have to admit that I slept on the bus. Zadar is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Croatia, known for its Roman and Venetian artifacts.  It's also a port town, which I only saw through the bus windows as we left.  Our tour began walking along the "peninsula" of the Old Town. This was one of our first sights--the boat is ferrying people across the inlet from the Old Town to the residential areas. This circular monument is the Greeting to the Sun .  It absorbs light during the day and at night gives off a light show. This is the sound of the Sea Organ .  It is really cool. Along the Waterfront Roman artifacts near the Forum Roman Forum with Church of St. Donatus on the left and the Cathedral of St. Anastasia to the right. Venice, Part 2 (Day 12, Mar 28)

So much for hope--it's still raining today.  Today we have our guided tour and gondola ride.  First we went to Murano island, famous for its glasswork. The glass factory This is only that last bit of what the craftsman did, but he finished this in less than a minute. Murano Lighthouse Rainy square   Walking on the platforms (that I thought were for taking pictures). Another leaning tower in Italy--San Giorgio Dei Greci I'm glad we pushed ourselves yesterday to see the square when there was sun because today there was none--the rain was actually worse.  We got to the gondolas and while i saw none that were running, they were willing to take us out in the downpour.  What really killed it though was that the stone steps you needed to get into the gondola were at least a foot underwater.  So we decided to cancel it and we should be getting a refund from Gate 1. We did get to look around the city some and we had a nice lunch and dessert. Fe's tiramisu and...
