Bled and Ljubljana (Day 10, Mar 26)

Our hotel is only steps away from Lake Bled.  So naturally, I was up early to take a walk around the lake.

Our hotel (Hotel Park) is the darker building.  Not much to look at, but the location was great, the buffet was good, and the room was comfortable.

I'm glad I got up early to do this but while flat and easy, the walk around the lake was longer than I thought at 6 km (3.7 mi).  I had to hustle towards the end to make it back in time for breakfast.  And I'm not much of a hustler.

After breakfast we got on the bus which took us to Bled Castle, the oldest castle in Slovenia.

Me at the castle printing press.

This is the result--with a lot of help from the printer actually running the place.

The castle was included in our overall cost, but I discovered it was 17 euros (about $18.50) per person.  If we were traveling here ourselves, I'd pay it anyway--it was worth it.

After this, the bus took us to Ljubljana for a half-day tour.  It wasn't real close--it took about 45 minutes to get there.

Ljubljana (Old Town) is very walkable.  We saw a lot, but I wish we'd have had more time--or even stayed here instead of Bled.  Everyone in the group really like it too and compared it favorably to Zagreb.  Poor Zagreb.

Our tour group has 23 people in it (including the guide), but ten of them were leaving the next day and not continuing to Venice.  Because of that, we had our farewell dinner tonight which was very good.

The trip is winding down--tomorrow we leave for Venice.

Zadar (Day 4, Mar 20)

A lot of bus travel today.  We left Opatija about 815 am and drove down to Zadar.  With stops, it took about four hours and I'll have to admit that I slept on the bus. Zadar is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Croatia, known for its Roman and Venetian artifacts.  It's also a port town, which I only saw through the bus windows as we left.  Our tour began walking along the "peninsula" of the Old Town. This was one of our first sights--the boat is ferrying people across the inlet from the Old Town to the residential areas. This circular monument is the Greeting to the Sun .  It absorbs light during the day and at night gives off a light show. This is the sound of the Sea Organ .  It is really cool. Final Thoughts

Another full disclosure:  if you hadn't noticed already, all the posts beginning with the second day in Dubrovnik were written and posted after we got home.  There just wasn't enough time in the day to get everything in.  Or I was just too tired. Gate 1 Travel is a great way to go and I'd recommend them to anyone.  I've said it before but our guide was really good and we saw a lot.  I was worried that we wouldn't have much time on our own but as you've seen, we were able to explore some by ourselves.  Also, the hotels we stayed in were more luxurious than what we do on our own and there were things (like the water taxi) that the company could arrange easier than I could.  All our fellow travelers in the group were very nice--we made some new friends on the way. All the places we saw were great, but I would have liked to spend more time in Pula, Zagreb (to give it more of a chance), Ljubljana, and of course Venice--a day and a half isn't enough time the...
